In Sympathy - The Honorable Stan Bernstein

Monday, December 28, 2020

Our Court mourns the passing of Judge Stan Bernstein on December 26, 2020.

Judge Bernstein joined the EDNY bench in 1996, having first served for two years as a bankruptcy judge in the Eastern District of Michigan from 1982-1984. During the intervening period, Judge Bernstein, (who also held a Ph.D. in Political Science from Harvard University) was a professor at several colleges as well as a bankruptcy lawyer at several law firms, including Foley Hoag LLP in Massachusetts.

As a bankruptcy judge, he was particularly sensitive to the plight of pro se debtors.  A few of his significant decisions include Med DiversifiedPhoto Circuits and Inapharma. Judge Bernstein also followed his interests by teaching as an adjunct professor at Hofstra Law and Touro Law.

After retiring from the bench in 2007, he and his wife Jane moved to Atlanta to be closer to their daughter and her family.

Judge Bernstein was 79 years old.  He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Jane, three children, Julie Roseman, Paul Bernstein, and Mark Bernstein, their spouses, and 5 grandchildren.

May he rest in Peace.
